Why does any online friendship seem to fail if the person lives a state away?

I have online friends from all over Wisconsin who I have talked to for years and years, but every single friendship that I ever made with anyone (be they through Yahoo, LJ, or MySpace) outside of this great dairy state seems to deteriorate in a month or sooner. Oh, also, keep in mind that I never see the Wisconsinites, so they don't have an advantage over the others or anything.

1. Well I have been through this before I feel the talking just gets boring and you have to spend more time in person with that person because they can tell you anything online and when you are in person they can't play any games with you because you are looking into their eyes.

3. I'm completely opposite, actually. I have never had an online friendship within my own state (Arizona), but I do have some out of state. PA, TX, NM, and Canada.
4. people are made to see and interact with each other physically for the most part. it's so much easier to forget about a screename than a person.
5. I think it is either a coincidence, or maybe it is a matter of self-fulfilling prophesy for you. I've got online friends from all over the country, some in other parts of the world, some that I have been keeping in contact with for more than 5 years. It might make a difference that I have made most of my online friends in larger online communities that stick together pretty well for years - so it is not simply a matter of keeping up with these individual friends, but with the whole community - if you see what I mean.
